Copycat Yin Yang

(Published on 17. May 2024, 07:04 by Scojo)

Rules:
  • Normal sudoku rules apply: Place the digits 1-9 once each in every row, column, and 3x3 box.
  • Yin Yang: Shade some cells so that all shaded cells form one orthogonally connected area, and all unshaded cells form another orthogonally connected area. No 2x2 area of cells may be entirely shaded or unshaded.
  • Copycat Cells: All shaded cells act as copycat cells. A copycat cell's value is defined as the digit in the cell rotationally opposite itself in the grid, regardless of the digit that actually appears in the copycat cell. For example, if r2c3 contains the digit 5, and r8c7 contains the digit 9, and r2c3 is shaded, the value of r2c3 is the digit in r8c7, which is 9.
  • Sight Lines: If a cell contains a circle, the value of that cell indicates how many cells of the same color (shaded or unshaded) are seen orthogonally from that position, including itself. The "other" color blocks vision.
  • Killer: The values of cells in a cage must sum to the number in the top left corner. Digits may not repeat within a cage, but values may.

Loved it! Took me quite a while to get started but once it clicked, it was such a smooth ride.

Wow, that was Superb!
I love the ruleset. Combining killer cages with copycats with sight lines was such a fun combination and it was such a smooth solve once I realized that the copycat values also applied to the sight lines.

Superb puzzle! It took me a while to find the logic for determining which cells were shaded vs unshaded (part of which was figuring out the consequences of the rule set), but once things got going it flowed very nicely for me.

Fantastic puzzle! And published on my birthday. Thanks for the gift Scojo :-)

Struggled a lot getting my head around these rules. And messed up a few times. But I got through it and really enjoyed it.

@sanabas I feel so silly missing that, thank you. And I agree with @matzrh about making the solution code row 7 and, or row 8 if possible.

This was a lot of fun start to end. Challenging, but not frustratingly difficult. Suggestion to @Scojo. Maybe you could use row 7 or 8 as a solution so that the final yin-yang needs to be solved (comments from @jordanp301 and @sanabas), if that's possible without resetting the solvers.

@jordanp r7c7 has a circle, which is what resolved the final yin-yang colouring for me after I had entered all the digits.

Funny ruleset, made my poor little brain twisting around. In the end it could find the way through. Thank you very much for sharing this gem.

Very lovely puzzle with a fresh ruleset, although I somehow managed to resolve without completing the Yin Yan coloring in 4 cells in rows 7 and 8. Thanks for this beautiful puzzle.

Really nice puzzle, scojo. Took me some time to work out the break-in but found it solved smoothly after that. Thanks for sharing.
