Foggy Nonsense

(Published on 10. May 2024, 15:57 by Oddlyeven)

Rules: Put the digits 0 to 8 once each in each row, column and box.
Doublers: One cell in every row, column and box is a doubler. This cell counts as double its value for the following rules. Each of the digits 0 to 8 appears exactly once in a doubler cell.
XV: Values on an X sum to 10. Values on a V sum to 5.
Cages: Digits in a cage may not repeat. Values in a cage sum to the total in the top-left most corner of the cage.
Fog of War: The grid is partially covered in fog. Placing correct digits will clear the fog from surrounding cells.

I rated this 2/5 difficulty

Very fun & approachable doubler puzzle! I really enjoyed the 0-8 ruleset as I have only solved a few puzzles with the same variation, and the puzzle did a great job of utilizing the 0-8 changes on the XVs.

The break-in/first stage of the puzzle (box 1) was fun, and I liked the use of the doubler logic. It was really cool to discover how the doubler impacted the XV cells in box, and how the reveal after the first digit placements heavily restricted the whole box. Break-in felt somewhere around 2/5 difficulty.

The rest of the puzzle was smooth and there were several nice pieces of logic throughout. The midgame was similarly approachable, and it felt generally between high 1* to 2* difficulty. I got stuck for a couple minutes in box 4, but then ralized I was forgetting that this puzzle doesn't use '9's. Other than that, I made consistent and rewarding progress throughout the solve.

I really liked that the doubler logic was approachable, as most doubler puzzles that I have solved have been quite hard. This puzzle has some of the best uses of doublers among puzzles with similar difficulty rating (that I have seen).

Overall, I decided that 2* is a fair difficulty rating. I think a beginner (at least with a bit of variant sudoku experience) should be able to solve this puzzle on their own. For those who are more advanced, this puzzle should still be interesting and fun - without requiring too much complex logic.

Great FoW puzzle and thanks for sharing!

I really enjoyed the challenge of this puzzle - not a ruleset I'd tried before.

I generally don't like doubler puzzles, but this one is a lot more approachable. It still has plenty of great logic and has a very smooth flow to it

I really liked that one. Got through it quite quick at first. But when I came to the last three columns I totally forgot about the doublers having to be unique... Took me quite a while afterwards.

I found this hard, but at least I could finish it.
It's crazy that so many of you rate is EASY.

Loved this puzzle, I don't get to solve many 2-star puzzles. But I have to say, eventhough slowly, I found the continuation always. took me 2 hours to solve though :-)

Thank you for such a beautiful puzzle!

This one was really tough for me until I realized I'd ignored the rule that each digit can be a doubler only once. I really need to remind myself to read the rules when I'm feeling stuck.

Fun puzzle. This combination of not hard, but still tricky with lots of ideas isn't something I see often. Just a good time to solve this.

Nice use of the doubler constraint in here along with some interesting deductions with the fog mechanic, mainly in certain boxes :)

Easy and sneaky at the same time. Great puzzle. Very fun to solve.

I realized in hindsight I got lucky: I made a deduction I had no logical right to make but it ended up being the right digit after all. I'll never know what mistake I made but I finished fair and square after that, ha ha.
