Rooftops

(Published on 3. May 2024, 21:00 by XeonRisq)

The idea of the rooftops constraint came about while ClashCode and myself were exploring 0 solve puzzles
and came across a puzzle in which we interpreted the rules incorrectly.
Turns out, this misinterpretation proved to be quite an interesting constraint and with a bit of exploration, this puzzle was born.
I have also added examples of both valid and broken Rooftop clues in rows.

  • Normal sudoku rules apply.
  • Rooftops : (Skyscraper hybrid)
Each digit in the grid represents the height of a building in its cell. Taller buildings obstruct the view of shorter building's rooftops behind them.
Clues outside the grid give the number of rooftops visible from the vantage point of the building in the first cell in the associated row or column. (not including itself)
(ie - A building of height 6 can only see the rooftops of buildings at height 5 or lower)

  • Below are examples - for rows only: (Red text explains why the clue is broken ; green text explains why the clue is valid)
The vantage point of the first cell (highlighted in yellow) is used as the maximum height in which to see the other rooftops along the row.
Cells in green are rooftops seen by the cell in yellow ; cells in gray are rooftops hidden behind taller buildings in front of them.

I always seem to forget to register my solve when I test your puzzles :)
But this was another one that was a lot of fun.

Much appreciated, as always!

Very nice puzzle! Ruleset is a bit weird but once it clicks the logic is really clean here.
-----
Thanks for the kind words, glad you found the logic enjoyable. Appreciate the solve/feedback.

Really fun and unique constraint! Straightforward solve, but still decently tricky. I enjoyed this a lot and can't wait to see more puzzles with this rule.
-----
Thanks for sharing your solving experience. Glad you enjoyed this one. I plan on further exploration and plan on posting another puzzle with this constraint, but the difficulty may increase a bit.

Really had trouble remembering the constraints so a lot of hard thinking involved kept thinking of them as normal skyscraper so that was on me.

But very interesting logic involved well done
-----
I agree, it's really weird to think of skyscrapers from the vantage point of another building, but here we are. I think more can be done with this constraint so I hope to bring some further interesting logic to the playing field. Appreciate the solve and your take on your solving experience.

That was a lot of fun, and a great introduction to the constraint. Thank you very much!
-----
Thanks dumediat, I'm still working on my proficiency at easier puzzles, but I'm glad I didn't make this too difficult since I'm trying to introduce the idea. Appreciate the kind words and feedback.
