Squidshoku (Squishdoku, Octopus)

(Published on 1. May 2024, 00:58 by ThePedallingPianist)

I'm a little late to the Squishdoku hype train, but after developing the Octopus ruleset, I noticed the pun potential and couldn't resist.

Many thanks to Marty Sears for letting me borrow his background image, and to Justin V and my dad for help with testing.

Squishdoku: Place digits from 1-9 in every cell, so that no digit repeats in a row, column, or 3x3 region. The dashed lines indicate the boundaries of regions, and cells on the dashed lines are simultaneously part of the regions on both sides of the line.

Octopus: draw 8 tentacles, all of the same length (in no. of cells) that emanate from the head (r4c4) and reach the edge of the grid, where they stop immediately. Tentacles do not cross or overlap, except at the head. Opposite tentacles are considered as single lines, which have 180 degree rotational symmetry.

Three of the octopus' four lines (opposite tentacle pairs) are entropic lines; i.e. every 3-cell sequence on the line contains a digit from {1,2,3}, {4,5,6} and {7,8,9}.

Three of the octopus' four lines (opposite tentacle pairs) are modular lines; i.e. every 3-cell sequence on the line contains a digit from {1,4,7}, {2,5,8} and {3,6,9}.

A digit in a grey circle is odd. Digits separated by a: white dot are consecutive; black dot are in a 1:2 ratio; X sum to 10; V sum to 5.

Solution code: The digits on the ends of all 8 tentacles, starting at the top left (r1c1) and going clockwise (8 digits)

This is a brilliant and utterly maddening puzzle. I've never had such a wide gap between seeing what the puzzle was asking and executing on that vision... that said, if you love ThePedallingPianist puzzles (and of course you do, because they're all lovingly crafted bits of insane, elegant logic) then you should set aside the time and commit to this beauty of a squidoku.
