Slingshot Skirmish 4 - Mirror Match

(Published on 30. April 2024, 13:34 by Allagem)

When I first set out to create a renban vs. whisper slingshot puzzle, I had multiple ideas for the break-in and couldn't fit them all in the same puzzle, so I turned each break-in into its own puzzle and started this series. As of this puzzle, all of the initial break-ins I created have already been showcased, so I had to come up with some new ideas. I'm glad I was able to maintain rotational symmetry for the first 3 puzzles, but for this entry I decided it was time to switch things up and I tried using mirror symmetry instead. This gave me a bit more freedom in setting clues and I am very proud of this final layout that puts up a strong and consistent fight throughout the solve, but should eventually fall to careful observation. As you might expect, symmetric slingshots have a tendency to break puzzles, so maintaining symmetry probably made creating this puzzle significantly more challenging than solving it ;) I will probably drop the obsession for symmetric grids in some future Slingshot Skirmish puzzle, but not quite yet!

In case anyone is unfamiliar with slingshots, here is an easy 6x6 example.

Slingshots: The digit adjacent to the base of a bent arrow also appears in the direction of the arrow at the distance indicated by the digit on the arrow.
6x6 Slingshot Example.

I wasn't quite sure what difficulty rating to give this puzzle, so please feel free to rate its difficulty according to your own experience :) I hope you enjoy my latest puzzle and the fourth entry in the Slingshot Skirmish series, Mirror Match!

Normal Sudoku rules apply.

Renban Lines: Digits on a pink line form a non-repeating, consecutive set of numbers in any order.

German Whispers: Adjacent digits on a green line differ by 5 or more.

Slingshots: The digit adjacent to the base of a bent arrow also appears in the direction of the arrow at the distance indicated by the digit on the arrow. (For example, if r2c2 was 3 and r1c2 was 4, then r1c6 must also be 3.)
