Killersaddles

(Published on 28. April 2024, 18:10 by Schma)

I want to continue with the saddle rule set :). Have a look at my "Killersaddles" Sudoku.

As always, any comments are highly appreciated. :)

The rules are as follows:

  • Sudoku: Normal Sudoku rules apply.
  • Saddle: Brown circles are saddle points and are always connected to 4 brown lines representing a saddle (or a hyperbolic paraboloid). Moving away from a circle, digits on a line have to either strictly increase or decrease in relation to the number in the circle. Each circle has two opposite lines with increasing property and two opposite lines with decreasing property. The orientation may be different for each circle.
  • Killer: Digits in Cages cannot repeat and sum to the given total.
  • Little Killer: Digits outside the grid show the sum of the digits along the indicated diagonal.
  • There are no negative constraints.

In terms of difficutly, I would rate the puzzle between 2/5 and 3/5. It is a bit more difficult than the first one I created, so if you have trouble with the saddle rule, check out my first puzzle. I want to come up with more of these in the future and I would love to see some other setter(s) finding joy with the ruleset :)

Solution code: All digits from row 3 (left to right).

This is certainly a 3* (maybe higher edging closer to 4), but this is a marvelous rule set, and part of the hurdle was adjusting to them. Some of the logic induced by the saddles is great. I'm excited to see more interactions unlocked

20 solves in 200 days? that does not seem reasonable.
definitely not a beginner puzzle.
even for intermediate solvers, it will help greatly to be able to visualize (curved) surfaces in 3 dimensions.

Loved this sudoku! I enjoyed the new ruleset, even though it took me a while to get my head around it. Looking forward to more puzzles :D
