Bananalanced Chaocolates

(Published on 21. April 2024, 17:09 by ThePedallingPianist)

This is my response to Scojo's setting prompt for last week, which was Non-9x9 grids and Extra Regions. I'll take any excuse to set a 6x6!

Play on SudokuPad

Chocolate Banana: Shade some cells such that orthogonally connected groups of shaded cells (chocolate bars) are square or rectangular, and orthogonally connected groups of unshaded cells (bananas) are not.

Cocoa Chaos Construction: Find six non-overlapping, orthogonally connected 6-cell regions such that any chocolate bar or banana is entirely contained within one single region. Fill every row, column and region with the digits 1-6 once each.

Banana Balance: The sum of all shaded cells is equal to the sum of all unshaded cells.

Circles: A digit in a circle (including Between Line circles) show the total number of cells in that chocolate bar or banana. Additionally, the circles represent an extra region, i.e. they contain the digits 1-6 once each.

Between Line: digits on a line must be strictly between the digits in the circles on its ends, and may repeat if allowed by other rules.

Solution code: Bottom row, left to right

I don't like chocolate, but for you I'll make an exception.

Loved this! Perfect difficulty level for me, and first ever chocolate banana puzzle I've done.

The combination of rules led to some very varied and unexpected logic, and some very pleasing moments indeed. Just when you think you've sussed out the main logic needed, it will switch and you'll need to figure out something completely different. Lovely stuff
