Hysteria (Chaos Construction)

(Published on 14. April 2024, 04:56 by ThePedallingPianist)

It's here. It's finally here. My first chaos construction.

Big shout outs to:
- Marty Sears, Scojo, blackjackfitz and my dad (ralphwaldo1/bellal) for help with testing;
- fritzdis, whose puzzle Balanced Chaos helped inspire this;
- juggler for providing a nice practice puzzle;
- The first puzzle I made using Regionometers;
- The solution guide video I have provided, should you get stuck!

To clarify a slight ambiguity in the rules: a regionometer that travels diagonally and clips the corner of a region border but then remains in the same region is not divided into two line segments by that region border. For example, if r1c5 and r2c6 are part of the same region, they are part of the same line segment.

Play on SudokuPad

Chaos Construction: Draw nine non-overlapping, orthogonally connected 9-cell regions and place 1-9 into every row, column and region. Some region borders have been given.

Toroidal grid: For the purpose of region building, the grid is a torus. E.g. r6c1 is considered to be orthogonally connected to r6c9, and r1c8 is considered to be orthogonally connected to r9c8.

Regionometers: Region borders divide lines into line segments. On each line, the sum of each line segment must strictly ascend from one end to another.

Solution code: Column 7, top to bottom

I found the break-in very intuitive, also happened to spot that supposed hard step right away, 4⅓ difficulty overall.

As a bassist, I just had to have a go at this puzzle. Hysteria is an epic and brutal song to play and this puzzle reflects it perfectly. Took me a solid few hours of chugging away along with help from your solve video. Thanks for this gnarly puzzle!!

Very impressive for a first CC - even more so for including the toroidal grid (which tripped me up once or twice). Break-in was sublime.

You won't see anything like this for a long time. True work of art!

It's honestly silly just how nice this puzzle is. Beautiful

Wow, just wow. One of my personal all time favorites.

Great fun, have to be very careful keeping track of colour options. I found the break-in to be not too tough, but then the middle section was the hardest bit, not helped by missing something obvious in hindsight.

Awesome, thanks!

Brilliant and intricate piece of work. You can tell a lot of time and effort and love went into this. The break-in was brutal, but rewards came in the form of a thoroughly enjoyable and unique region building puzzle after that

I didn't know how much I needed a toroidal chaos construction in my life until this puzzle. I highly recommend it if you have a few hours to spare!

Amazing! Give yourself some time with this one, but the investment is so worth it.
