Differentials 101

(Published on 8. April 2024, 03:08 by arbitrary)

I enjoyed setting using this constraint, so decided to make an approachable puzzle using it. If anyone enjoys this solve, they may wish to try the more challenging puzzle with the same ruleset: Differential.

Rules:
  • Normal sudoku rules apply.
  • A clue in a cell indicates the difference between either its two horizontal neighbors, or its two vertical neighbors, or both (in either order) in case of a double-clue.

For example, the clue in R4C4 specifies that the difference between R4C3 and R4C5 and the difference between R3C4 and R5C4 must both be 7.

If a clue is in a cell bordering the grid then, for the difference normal to the border, the second digit should be taken as zero.

Below is a 6x6 example to illustrate the ruleset. Example link: https://sudokupad.app/riq0e21zqu .

Very nice. Though later in the puzzle I kept seeing the clues as pencil marks!

I had thought I would be left with unresolvable pairs, until I rememberred the clues!

Wow, what a blast! I found it really enjoyable and with many "aha!" moments, and not THAT easy or trivial. I liked it a lot, great one Arbitrary!

Thank you, Fra314. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Hi arbitrary, thanks for this ruleset, a new one for me and I liked this especially after in the previous 3-star version I couldn't get a single digit after 45 minutes! Am interested to see how future puzzles play with this ruleset

---

Thank you. That other puzzle probably is closer to 4/5 difficulty, I've updated the estimate.
