Landvermessung U-Bahn #1

(Published on 4. April 2024, 21:40 by The Book Wyrm)

This puzzle is a combination of landvermessung, a fairly obscure genre, and U-Bahn. It is intended to be a relatively approachable introduction to this ruleset.

Rules:

  • U-Bahn: Draw a connected loop network through the centers of some cells, which may branch or turn, but may not have any dead ends.

Clues to the left and above the grid indicates how many times the corresponding line shape (i.e. a cross, branch, straight line, or turn) appears in the corresponding row or column, irrespective of the line shape's rotation.

  • Landvermessung: A clue in the centre of 4 cells gives the number of cells in the smallest possible loop which:

    1. Visits all those surrounding cells which are part of the network.

    2. Only uses segments from the network.

    3. Doesn't cross or overlap itself.

An infinty symbol ∞ means that there is no such loop possible (but at least one of the surrounding cells must be part of the loop network).

For extra clarification, an example puzzle and it's solution are given. The example puzzle can be solved here.

Amazing puzzle with fresh and at times confusing logic for me (in a good way: I really learnt something in this puzzle). Thanks!

Hi, it seems intriguing, but I'd like a clarification of the rules please.
Does the infinity symbol mean that there is absolutely no loop connecting all network cells adjacent to the clue, OR could the infinity symbol also refer to a situation where there is such a loop, but it's crossing itself or being "cut short"?

Like a clue has three adjacent network cells, A and B are part of one loop, and B and C are part of another loop. Those two loops partialy overlap, with there being a bigger loop that A,B, and C are all part of, but it has a connecting line from B towards the other side of the loop. Would that be an infinity clue on the intersection of cells A, B and C, or a number clue ?

--------

'that there is absolutely no loop connecting all network cells adjacent to the clue' - This is the correct interpretation. 'shortcuts' are irrelevent to the clues.
If I'm understanding your example correctly, that would result in a number clue, not an infinity clue (which would have the value of the larger loop connecting A,B, and C).

Great combo !
You know what I like about this puzzle ? The title, because it says #1 ! And that means we get to solve a #2 with that awesome ruleset pretty soon I guess.
Looking forward, thanks :)

Awesome! The ruleset was hard for me to properly digest, but amazing to play with once I finally more or less understood how things work. Looking forward to the monster that I expect will follow next! :D
