Think Outside the Box

(Published on 8. April 2024, 07:45 by Jrosas)

Rule set:

Normal sudoku rules apply

Digits on a thermometer increase from the bulb to the tip.

A digit in a circle indicates the number of circles that contain the digit. “Circle” does not include the thermometer bulbs. [I first saw this rule in Marty Sears’ “Circular Reasoning” on the CTC YouTube channel. I could not find a tag for it in the list].

“Think Outside the Box”: The digit in the center cell of each of the 9 bold 3x3 boxes is the sum of the circled digits outside that box and adjacent to the box orthogonally or diagonally.

To illustrate the “Think Outside the Box” rule, I created this photo. The digits in the center cell of four of the squares are colored yellow, green, blue, and red. The digits in circles in cells outside the particular box are shaded the corresponding color. The digit in each of those center cells is equal to the sum of the digits in the other cells of the same color. Note that one blue cell is diagonally adjacent to the box with a blue cell in its center.
