Japanese Sums #6: Volatility

(Published on 21. March 2024, 10:05 by Myxo)

After setting a lot of Sudoku and Nuri-Maze, it was refreshing to make a Japanese Sums puzzle again. Hopefully this variant is as much fun to solve as it was to set. Enjoy!

Rules:

Shade some cells of the grid and fill all unshaded cells with digits from 1-9, such that no digit repeats in any row or column.

Clues outside the grid indicate the sums of contiguous segments of unshaded cells in that row or column. There must be at least one shaded cell seperating two segments. All such sums are given and in the correct order.

However, in every row and column exactly two clues are wrong, with one sum being smaller (but not 0) and one sum being bigger than its clue suggests.

Solution code: row 3 and row 4, S for shaded cells

Really hard. Really amazing. What impressed me most is that no trial and error is needed at all. From the beginning to the end, the logic chain is so smooth that I wonder how the author designed it.

Nice concept, flawless execution. Clean & crisp logic. This is one of those puzzles where the "difficulty" lies not in how far I have to look ahead but rather in the way the clues dance and weave together. To borrow an adjective I normally only use on dumediat's puzzles, "like magic".

Insane puzzle!! All the clues are so well chosen, leaving you just barely enough information to continue until the end.

Amazing puzzle! Very consistently challenging, but all the logic is satisfying!

Myxo this puzzle is absolutely incredible! Very difficult but all of the deductions were so rewarding it made the challenge to find them fully worth it. To create such a brutal yet elegant solve path is a great setting achievement. Thanks so much for creating this masterpiece!

A masterpiece indeed! At times it is hard to know what to do, but eventually something clear and wonderful emerges out of nowhere. Amazing!

Wow wow wow ! I loved this !
Cuckoo's nest level of crazyness in that setting...
Enjoyed the whole solve, even if I got reeeaaaally stuck a couple times. Amazing how some clues feel almost random at first, but of course they are just pretending to be volatile and they come back into play again later on to resolve everything, and so smoothly. Meisterwerk !
Danke :)

My favorite twist on JS in a long time, makes up for some quite original logic.
