Sky-Skyscraper

(Published on 22. March 2024, 15:29 by Phistomefel)

This puzzle is inspired by The Book Wyrm's fantastic Japanese Japanese Sums Sums, but uses Skyscraper clues instead. Here are the rules:
  1. Write each digit from 1 to 9 into exactly one cell in every row, every column and every 3x3 box.
  2. Write skyscraper clues in the cells right outside of the grid. To this end, consider each digit in the grid as a building of that height. Skyscraper clues right outside the grid give the number of buildings that can be seen from that direction, with larger buildings hiding smaller ones.
  3. The given outer numbers function as Skyscraper clues, as well. Yet, they take the real Skyscraper clue right in front of it into account. Of two buildings of the same size only the one in front is visible. E.g. an outer 3-clue can be satisfied as follows:
    3 | 4 | 2 4 1 7 9 5 3 8 6
The 4 as real Skyscraper clue sees the 2, 4, 7, and 9 and is therefore satisfied. The outer Skyscraper clue sees the real Skyscraper clue (4) hiding the 2 and the 4 in the grid. Additionally, it sees the 7 and 9.
To illustrate the rules, here is an example:

If you want to try this puzzle, you find the link here.

The actual puzzle is also available online in Penpa Plus or the CTC-App (Many thanks to henrypijames). Have fun solving!

A word on the solution check in Penpa: it only works if - just like in the example - all of the normal Skyscraper clues in front of the given outer clues are correctly put in.

Solution code: First column

Simon from cracking the cryptic mentioned this puzzle, and I didn't want to wait for him to get around to solving it so I came to take a look. First time here. I loved it as I always do with Phistomefel puzzles. The nested skyscrapers were an interesting idea and almost tripped me up a couple of times. Thanks Phistomefel, I will go play more of your puzzles next.

Solving a Phistomefel is so satisfying! This one was again a tough cookie but it really crumbled well once the break-in was found. Beautiful construction. Thanks a lot for sharing this masterpiece.

I lost of words! This is just beyond my imagination! The logic is just so brilliant! Thank you again for creating an awesome puzzle for me!

Wow, just absolutely wonderful and minimalistic, this puzzle! Had so much fun with this one! Thank you Phistomefel!

Great puzzle as usual - almost too much for my tired brain. Got the break-in fine, and spent the rest of the solve on uncovering "how did I ever imagine that was an option for that cell?" and thinking about complicated things rather than simple ones. Don't solve this if you are tired. But if you are not, and you are up to it, it will give you great joy.

Awesome puzzle. Hard but still approachable. Key to solve was to keep reminding myself to do Sudoku (marking all the candidates and so on) and not just contemplate the skyscrapers.

A lovely challenge with nice fresh logic. I found it hard to know where to look next at times but enjoyed it throughout.

Nice concept, and very well executed! Fun puzzle with a lot of nice logic. Takes a bit to get your head around the ruleset and some of the interactions, but after you get started it's not overly difficult.

Very honoured to have inspired a puzzle like this. Thank you.

Thanks a lot for the nice feedback! I have to say, your Japanese Japanese Sums Sums was really something else. I love the idea of using JS clues to build an entire JS puzzle including the clues. Thanks again for the inspiration! (:

Unreal how you come up with brand new ideas.
It took me a while to do the example puzzle and I made so many mistakes that I understood the break-in. Lol

Exemplary empty grid construction, with a surprisingly not-strictly-linear solve path. Confirm 4 difficulty.
