Typique de la region

(Published on 19. March 2024, 12:50 by sujoyku)

After my puzzle “X-quisite Cuisine” has received some nice feedback, I have set another puzzle with dual X-sum/Sandwich clues. Note that any clue outside the grid simultaneously serves as an X-sum and as a Sandwich clue. In this puzzle, the variant is combined with region sum lines. I like to thank CaptZebraCakes for testing and giving feedback on the puzzle. The difficulty could be either on the tougher side of 1/5 or an easy 2/5. Decide for yourselves and let me know in the comments how you think about it. I wish you joyful solving!

- Normal sudoku rules apply.

- Region sum lines: Blue lines are region sum lines, i.e. the digits on a blue line sum to the same value in each 3x3 region the line passes through. Different region sum lines can sum to different totals.

ALL clues outside the grid are both X-sum and Sandwich clues.

- X-sum: An X-sum clue indicates the sum of the first X digits in the respective row or column where X is the first digit seen from the clue.

- Sandwich: A Sandwich clue indicates the sum of all digits between 1 and 9 in the respective row or column.

Thank you for this nice puzzle ! Those constraints fit perfectly together.
I am quite curious about the choice of the title.

You are much welcome, goodcity, thank you for commenting! I am glad that you liked the combination of constraints. Concerning the title: It does not have a "deep meaning". I had titled the prequel to this one with a Cuisine reference (little wordplay with Sandwich clues). My first title idea here was "Cuisine de la region", but I somehow liked "Typique de la region" better and I think it makes a little sense when you consider the impact of the region sum lines on some of the X-sum/Sandwich clues.

I ended up with two possible solutions at the end because I couldn't disambiguate columns 7 & 8. The 9's were set due to sandwich clue, but the other pairs in each row of those columns could work either way. Not sure what I missed, but it solved both ways and the second one worked for the Solution Code.

Hi PuzzleDoubt, thank you for commenting! To all of my knowledge there is only one solution. If you like to share an image or tell me exactly which cells you had filled (and which not), I could take a look.
Kind regards, sujoyku

Nevermind... I completely overlooked the 11 clue that fixed the rest of the digits. Sorry for the confusion!

**
Ah, no worries, PuzzleDoubt! The 11-cage is indeed crucial. I actually had tested the puzzle without it and, in that case, found two different solutions as well.

an approachable 2* puzzle once you realize how the three different types of clues interact together. Excellent solve path
