The Constable

(Published on 18. March 2024, 08:34 by Scojo)

Rules:
  • Irregular Sudoku: Place the digits 1-9 once each in every row, column, and outlined region.
  • XV: An X between two cells indicates that the digits in those cells sum to 10. A V between two cells indicates that the digits in those cells sum to 5. Cells without an X or V between them must not sum to 5 or 10.
  • Japanese Sums: The colored circles outside the grid indicate the order of runs of contiguous cells found in that row or column that must be shaded the color of the clue. The number in the clue indicates the sum of the cells in the run. There must be at least one unshaded cell between runs of the same color, though there is no need between runs of differing colors. A '?' as a clue represents any unknown total. All runs are given.

Me at start: oh don't forget the neg constraint
Me after staring at screen for 15 minutes: oh the rules had a neg constraint

I just love the combination of Japanese sums with irregular sudoku. The only thing that gets me every single time is the negative rule for any ruleset tbh.

Beautiful puzzle, Scojo, especially the placement of the V to complete the image!

Interestingly, it's almost solvable without the negative XV constraint, apart from two deadly patterns at the end (as I discovered when I made it to that point forgetting the negative constraint entirely, and thinking that this was more like a four-star puzzle!).

A very nicely flowing solve if you read the rules thoroughly... which I didn't.

Excellent puzzle, thanks! Got stuck for a while until I re-read the rules and saw the negative constraint. Smooth after that.
