Interlude

(Published on 12. March 2024, 14:00 by ThePedallingPianist)

I'm currently working on one of my craziest, most intricate puzzles yet - my first ever 9x9 chaos construction - and unsurprisingly, it's taking a while. In the meantime, therefore, I thought I'd make something relatively straightforward to keep up appearances on LMD. It's very refreshing to make a puzzle using just fog and killer cages with no fancy modifiers. This may not win any prizes for originality, but I hope you find it approachable and perhaps even fun!

One of my favourite songs as a teenager was Hysteria by Muse, which is preceded on its album by a short track called Interlude, so I'm setting myself up with a perfect potential title for the chaos construction and giving myself a good reason to persist with it!

Normal sudoku rules apply.

Some of the grid is covered in fog. Enter correct digits to clear fog.

Digits in a cage do not repeat and sum to the given total, which always appears in the leftmost cell of the topmost row within the cage. Cages do not overlap.

Solution code: Bottom row, left to right

I have been playing puzzles here for the last several weeks, but this compelled me to register an account so I could heap praise upon it,

I’m a relatively poor solver, and I get frustrated easily, but this one kept me hooked from beginning to end for a solid hour, to the point where I legitimately had no idea I’d spent that much time on it,

Kudos, and thanks.

Loved this puzzle! The design is so intricate, with so many beautiful deductions along the way. The location of cage totals in fog puzzles often leads to some really interesting logic. Thanks for setting and sharing!

Wow - phenomenal puzzle! And Muse has been my favourite artist since I was introduced to them a bit over a year ago! I can't wait to try the chaos construction! :)

Wow. I absolutely loved this puzzle. My hardest solve to date probably (I'm still rather new), but absolutely beautiful and each successive break-in getting harder was just perfect.

Thanks so much for the lovely puzzle! Really enjoyed it all the way through.

WOW, needed a killer cage combination reference for this one! Brilliant setting and yes, it was fun!

Never felt the urge to comment on here, but I'd like to change that to let you know that I absolutely enjoyed the last break-in. While figuring it out I was constantly thinking "no, this is not wat the setter meant for me to do, this can't be it...". Great setting!

Nice puzzle. It should be said explicitly that cages must not overlap in the rules.

TPP: Good point, thanks! Clarification added :)

I came to point out the omission in the rules, happy to see it was fixed in the interim! I spent a long time until I supposed that was a necessary rule in order to break it. But I enjoyed the process just the same!!!

Some total chump forgot to put "do not repeat" in the rules... fixed now! Thanks to my dad for pointing it out and to the solvers who correctly assumed that's what I meant!

Very elegant setting!

I love the flow in this puzzle, though I think it is more towards the higher end of 2-star puzzles in difficulty.

Nice foggy flow. Thank you.

Really enjoyable, thanks. The final breakout was a bit hairier than expected (though completely obvious when I saw it).

Half my puzzles are named after random songs, so I applaud your titling. I was also into Muse in the early 2000s -- I programmed my crappy Nokia phone's ring tone to play the guitar riff from Plug in Baby.
