Regional Bat (Region sum lines/Battenburg sudoku)

(Published on 11. March 2024, 12:11 by sujoyku)

The title of this puzzle has no deeper meaning than the point that the region sum lines to me kind of resemble a bat. The puzzle combines the Battenburg constraint with region sum lines which allows for some nice interactions. Again, I am grateful to CaptZebraCakes for testing the puzzle. Please feel free to write in the comments how you like the variant. I wish you joyful solving!

- Normal Sudoku rules apply.

- Region sum lines: Blue lines are region sum lines, i.e. the digits on a blue line sum to the same value in each 3x3 region the line passes through. Different region sum lines can sum to different totals. If a blue line enters a 3x3 region more than once, each segment has to be considered separately.

- Parity line: Adjacent digits on a red line must alternate between odd and even.

- Battenburg: Whenever 2 odd and 2 even digits form a 2x2 checkerboard pattern (e.g. R1C1 and R2C2 even, R1C2 and R2C1 odd), a Battenburg marking is given. If there is no such marking, the above pattern is not allowed.

Took me longer than I'd like to admit to see the relationship between the middle sum line and box 3 but once I did it was quickly solved. Very nice.

It so often happens to me that I miss some deductions that seem completely obvious in hindsight.
