Chaos Pentominoes

(Published on 9. March 2024, 23:14 by Tacosian)

Rules
  • Place the digits 1-10 once each in every row and column.

  • Divide the grid into pentominoes such that all cells belong to a pentomino.
  • Pentominoes of the same shape cannot share an edge, regardless of reflection or rotation.
  • Digits may not repeat anywhere in the grid within the same pentomino shape, regardless of reflection or rotation (e.g. if one L pentomino contains the digit 5, then no other L pentomino in the grid may also contain a 5).

  • If a cell with arrows contains a dashed square, then the digit in the cell is the number of pentomino borders seen in the indicated directions combined.
  • If a cell with arrows does not contain a dashed square, then the digit in the cell is the number of pentomino borders seen in each direction individually.
  • Edges of the grid do not count as pentomino borders for the purpose of arrow clues.
Example

The following image is an example of a partially filled grid which adheres to the rules of the puzzle. This is provided to illustrate the ruleset, and is not necessarily extendable to a valid full puzzle.

To trigger answer check in SudokuPad, use the digit 0 to represent 10. However, do not forget that it counts as 10 for the purpose of arrow clues.

Solution code: The digits in row 2 from left to right. (If you solved in SudokuPad, remember that the 0 is actually a 10.)

This puzzle has a beautiful parsimony to it; it took me a while to solve, but it was engaging every step of the way.

After the region division is completed, then comes the real hell...

Yes, because I don't like flattery...

I never expect the pentominoes construction to be the easy part, absolutely terrific puzzle - both the original and current meaning.

This is a beast of a puzzle! I just can't begin to imagine how hard it must have been to set! Very very well done!

One of the toughest (and most rewarding) puzzles I've solved in a while! I had to take a bit of a break after getting the regions before tackling the Sudoku, but it was a very enjoyable ride throughout!

Absolutely loved this one. The pentomino setting and the sudoku were both really challenging and very satisfying to solve.

Absolutely brilliant puzzle! Amazing construction. Incredibly hard and diabolically clever, both the placing of the pentominoes and the sudoku. Thank you so much.

Awesome region building! The resulting Irregular was a scanning nightmare for me, it felt satisfying to finish in the end, though.

Wow it was such a beautiful idea to make a puzzle like this. And once you get the shapes of the pentominoes, sudoku becomes even more monstrous. Loved it!
