One Of Each

(Published on 9. March 2024, 19:43 by HalfBakedLunatic)

A few years ago I made a puzzle I called Potpourri because it had 'a little bit of everything in it'. This puzzle takes the idea to the extreme, and has some deliciously wicked logic in a few places. Enjoy!

The Rules:
• Normal Sudoku Rules Apply
• Placing a correct digit will clear the fog around that cell (No cheating! All digits can be deduced through pure logic)
• Puzzle contains "One of Each":
Killer cage, X, V, White dot, Black dot, German Whisper (green), Thermometer (yellow), Renban (purple), Palindrome (red), Region Sum Line (blue), Zipper Line (Teal), Quad, Odd (round), Minimum value, Maximum value, Arrow.
(For clarity, there is no branching on any of the lines)

Lovely flow of logic!!! For once I didn't make any mistakes and got through on the first pass!

Thank you everyone for the great comments. I've been warned that there are a lot of people who 'just don't like FoW puzzles' - but I'm very happy with the logic behind each step in this puzzle, and it's great to see all the positive remarks!

This construction is elegant and sublime. I'm just amazed at how the solution path steers you from one step to the next, and kept some secrets hidden all the way to the end. Outstanding.

Minor revision to puzzle, added a 'Maximum Value' cell and Zipper which disambiguates potential wrong steps in the fog.

This was great. Some spots were really really hard, but very rewarding to finish the solve!

At one point I could only progress by making the assumption that the renban line doesn't branch inside the fog even though that's not given in the rules. Unless I missed something crucial maybe this info should be added to the rules?

-- Hi @JohnDoeJersey, you should be able to place digits that clear enough fog so that you can see there is no place for the Renban to branch.

-- Edit, I thought you were referring to the top of the Renban. You are correct, it would be possible to branch at the bottom. I added clarification to the rules as requested.

Amazingly well built, very carefully crafted. How can anyone rate this lower than 100%? It's awesome!

That was an astonishing puzzle with the clues carefully placed and working nice together. Thanks for this fun puzzle!

For Quad, is it a given that there are 4 values in ascending order so that the top left is going to be the lowest value and bottom right is the greatest?

-- Hi Deino42, the numbers around the quad aren't in any particular order - but you should only see 2 numbers at first, and these are helpful early on, and the second two numbers you won't clear from the fog till near the end - and they are critical for finishing the puzzle. Yes, clues can overlap (but there is a specific trick to the Palindrome line which will let you place the 7 in Box 7 ... but you might have to think hard about it :-)

Edit: also, can clues overlap such as a line in a cage?
