Cryptic checkers (Ambiguous Battenburg sudoku)

(Published on 9. March 2024, 18:04 by sujoyku)

I have set another “Ambiguous Battenburg” puzzle. The beginning should be quite approachable, but the second half gets trickier. Overall, the difficulty could lie between 3/5 and 4/5. I like to thank CaptZebraCakes for testing and giving detailed feedback on the puzzle. As always, your suggestions and opinions in the comments are much appreciated. I wish you happy solving!

- Normal Sudoku rules apply.

- Killer cages: Digits in a cage sum to the clue in the top left.

- Ambiguous Battenburg: Mark each cell of the grid with one of two different colours (e.g. red and blue) such that each digit always appears in cells of the same colour. (For example, if a 1 is in a red cell, all 1s in the grid have to be in red cells.) In any killer cage, all cells have the same colour (i.e. any cage is entirely red or entirely blue, but does not consist of both red and blue cells). Whenever 2 digits of both colours each form a 2x2 checkerboard pattern, a Battenburg marking is given. If there is no such marking, the above pattern is not allowed.

Thank you for this very interesting puzzle, dear sujoyku! I really enjoyed solving it, once I had understood the rules! ;) And like Grey already wrote, the logic flew nicely. :)

Great puzzle! Very smooth. Also agree about the 2*. Maybe it's because I'm familiar with the ambiguous Battenburg logic from your other puzzle.

Thank you for commenting, topoi! I am glad that you liked the puzzle. Concerning difficulty: As you are agreeing with Grey's assessment, it is probably just me overestimating the difficulty level. My intended solve path involves a few advanced Sudoku techniques (that probably can be circumvented) which made me rather err on the more difficult side. Thanks again for sharing your opinion.
Kind regards, sujoyku

Brilliant puzzle! However I personally find it to be closer to a 2 star puzzle as the logic puzzle flowed nicely. I only struggled a bit at the end in disambiguating the second set of digits.

Thank you for the comment, Grey! I am glad that you enjoyed the flow of the puzzle. Also thanks for sharing your perspective on difficulty. The placement inside one of the groups was the part that I found most difficult.
Kind regards, sujoyku
