German Summing Doppelganger
(Published on 3. March 2024, 18:40 by feethy)
This puzzle comes from my love for a ruleset I discovered about a year ago which is the Doppelganger. This puzzle might feel hard if it's your first time encountering the variant. Make sure to check Kafkapharnaum's puzzles as he's the creator of the ruleset and he has plenty of them waiting to be solved. Anyway, enjoy solving!
Solve on Sudokupad (with track cells)
GERMAN WHISPER LINES
• Along green lines, any pair of adjacent digits must have a difference of at least 5.
X-SUMS
• Clues outside the grid show the sum of the first X digits from that direction, where X is the first of those digits.
• Additionally the first X digits act like a straight german whisper line of length X (i.e. if an outside clue is 14 then 392 is valid but not 374 nor 329)
DOPPELGANGER
• Every row, column, and box contains the digit 0 always, as well as eight out of the nine digits from 1 to 9 (ie, it's missing one digit that is not 0)
• No two row, no two column, and no two box may be missing the same digit
• For each 0 in the grid, the digits missing in its row, its column, and its box must be three different digits
•
• Cells outside the grid are used to put the digit missing in the row/column/box (i.e. if the digit 2 was missing from box 1, there would be a 2 in the first cell of the box outside the grid)
Solution code: Row 1 and column 6 (from left to right and top to bottom) (Do not include digit in track cells)

Great puzzle!
Pretty interesting and not that hard break-in, figuring out how the x-sums working with the whispers. Still quite a lot of work after that, but the clues in the tracking cells and doppelganger ruleset led to some interesting deductions.

Despite its intimidating appearance, the break-in wasn’t too tough and the X-sums fell fairly swiftly. Still took a bit of hard work after that, but a very enjoyable and smooth solve. The GW lines in the tracker cells were a nice touch!

Congrats to your first Doppelganger puzzle! The combination of X-Sums and German whisper made the break-in easy. Also the doppelganger part leads to a smooth solving part. Overall very enjoyable. Looking forward to your next one!

Thanks so much for adding this one to the LMD catalogue! It’s been quite pleasing lately to see it take shape like that, with more puzzles from more setters; it’s really great to see the ruleset used in all these different and creative ways, and now I feel like this definitely warrants adding, you know, that other one ;-) Anyhow, great work and thanks again!
