U-Bahn under Tripleblock for polar

(Published on 1. January 2024, 08:23 by KNT)

Shade three cells in every row and column of the first diagram, and enter into every other cell a digit from 1 to 9 such that every row and column contains each digit from 1 to 9 exactly once. Clues above and to the left of the grid are tripleblock clues: the first value gives the sum of the digits between the first and second shaded cell in the row or column, likewise with the second value and the second and third shaded cell. These values may be zero if the shaded cells are adjacent.

The second diagram is a standard U-Bahn. Draw a loop network through the centers of some cells, which may branch or turn, but may not have any dead ends. A clue outside the grid indicates how many times the corresponding line shape (i.e. a cross, branch, straight line, or turn) appears in the corresponding row or column, irrespective of the line shape's rotation.

The third diagram indicates how often sections of the subway plan occur under numbers if the first two diagrams are superimposed. In this table, '0' references shaded cells. A similar example of how this works can be found here.

Different letters replace different digits, same letters replace same digits. No multi-digit clue has a leading zero.

Solution code: Row 7 of the first diagram with S for shaded cell. Then, for every column (besides the last) of the second diagram, the number of segments exiting to the right.

A very long brutal but enjoyable puzzle! The variety in involved deductions is off the charts.

Well that was a wonderfully unexpected gift - thank you dear friend :) Of course a brilliant re-invention of a classic (to me lol) U-bahn variant; a joy to solve and it's quite bonkers indeed how few clues you needed.

P.S. I didn't quite hit your time target... But there's always next year? :)

This was a ton of fun to solve, and not as hard as I expected it to be when I read the ruleset

Happy belated birthday, polar, and happy new year to the rest of you!

I hope this is something to chew on for a while; I expect to not post for much of the first half of 2024 as I'll be working on something rather different for later in the year. So, enjoy!
