Tinsel Box

(Published on 28. December 2023, 09:48 by starwarigami)

N.B. This was my submission to the Cracking the Cryptic Secret Santa event, created for Ben, shared here with his permission.

Normal Sudoku rules apply.

The pieces of tinsel in the box are Anti-Factor lines: Digits along a line of length n must not be a multiple or factor of n (other than 1), and must sum to a multiple of n.

There is nothing special about the small boring piece of silver tinsel. Each other brightly coloured piece of tinsel enforces a different one of the line constraints listed below, in addition to the anti-factor logic. Which colour represents which constraint is to be determined by the solver.
  • Entropic: Each set of 3 adjacent digits along the line contains a low digit (123) a medium digit (456) and a high digit (789).
  • German Whispers: Adjacent digits along the line differ by at least 5.
  • Palindrome: The digits along the line read the same from either end.
  • Parity: Adjacent digits along the line alternate odd and even.
  • Region Sum: For each region the line passes through, the digits on that line in that region sum to the same value.
  • Zipper: Digits on the line an equal distance from the centre of the line sum to the same value. For a line of odd length, the digit in the middle cell is equal to that value.

The "boring" one was the hardest/last one to fill. Very nice. Thanks.

Incredible puzzle. Looks a bit more than 3* to me. Very well done.

@mihel111 Thanks for the kind words! I was torn as to whether to rank it 3 or 4 for difficulty. I probably did underestimate the challenge for anyone not as familiar with Anti-Factor lines as I am

There are seven lines and only six constraints. Do I misunderstand the rules or is there a constraint missing?

@SirWoezel

"There is nothing special about the small boring piece of silver tinsel. Each other brightly coloured piece of tinsel enforces a different one of the line constraints"

i.e. the silver line does not have an additional constraint - sorry if the wording is confusing

Aha, thanks. I'll try again then.
