Seeing Dots

(Published on 29. November 2023, 20:31 by arbitrary)

This is intended as a relatively easy, introductory puzzle for pointer dots, an extension of the pointer arrows type constraint to kropki dots. A simpler 6x6 puzzle is also available to help solvers gain familiarity with the constraint. If this isn't an original constraint, please let me know in the comments and I'll credit the precedent.

A previous version of this puzzle contained a mistake. Many thanks to @goodcity for pointing this out. Apologies to those who may have tried to solve that version.

Rules:
  • Normal sudoku rules apply.
  • Kropki dots: Digits connected by white does are consecutive.
  • Pointer dots: Digits connected by green dots are consecutive. Digits connected by red dots have a ratio of two. Additionally, cells on green and red dots see a cell containing the same digit as themselves in a diagonal direction. The connected digit on the dot indicates the diagonal distance to this cell. There may be other instances of the same digit in between and/or in other diagonal directions.

Below is an example to illustrate the rule set.

Hi! I'm sorry I never got back to you yesterday with the imgur link, life got in the way, but today I picked up the puzzle again and restarted it, and had no issues solving it. I was more methodical with the pointer dots and I think that helped.

Thank you for the puzzle, and for responding to my comments!

Above is an imgur link to my final solution. The colored cells were 89 pairs at the end that could have chosen either way. Perhaps two solutions? Still, a very nice puzzle and I really like the ruleset.

Thankyou for solving the puzzle @anyeyeball. The 8 on the green dot in box 7 places an 8 in R2C9, which resolves the solution.

You're right! I missed that, and just happened to guess the right way at the end. Thank you! -- anyeyeball (looking forward to more of these)
