Metope (Chaos Construction)

(Published on 9. December 2023, 08:00 by tallcat)

Chaos constructions are very much out of my comfort zone as a setter and this certainly showed in my first one (find it here) which had a big difficulty spike in the middle. For this second puzzle, I focused quite a bit on ensuring a smoother solve while still hopefully having some fun logic. Here, I have used the "Ariadne/Oenopion" ruleset that has been used so well by KNT, Niverio, and others. Happy solving!!

Chaos Construction: Place the digits 1 to 9 once each in every row, column, and region. Regions are orthogonally connected and must be located by the solver.

Arrows: The digit in a clued cell indicates the number of cells seen in the indicated directions combined (including itself). Region borders obstruct vision.

Can be solved online at Sudokupad

Solution code: Row 8 (left to right) and column 7 (top to bottom). 18 digits, no spaces.

This is possibly the hardest puzzle I have solved on LMD on my own. Thank you for including the solution so I could check myself before I got too far off path. While it is very challenging, I think it is fair and if you have seen this type of clue before, the path is fairly well telegraphed.

Lots of cool and neat deduction regarded to the region building parts with also a fun irregular resolution near the end. Well done! :)

What a beautiful puzzle! Very smooth from beginning to end. At one point it felt as to how the big digits would resolve themselves but the logic just kept on flowing steadily. Really enjoyed vpevery bit of the solve. Wonderful experience. Thanks a lot for sharing this masterpiece.

Another construction of sublime genius that had me asking weird Tallcat-y questions throughout the solve.
