⛷ Skiing through the fog ⛷

(Published on 19. November 2023, 06:26 by ElChiglia)

---- RULES ----

Normal Sudoku rules apply: Fill the grid with digits 1 to 9 appearing once each in every row, column, and 3x3 box.

Skiing through the fog: Help the skier navigate through the fog. The skier starts at the arrow and needs to pass through all gates (by crossing all between lines). The path must run orthogonally between adjacent cells and cannot hit the poles (circles) of the gates. Furthermore, since we are on a steep hill, the path can only go left, right, or down, but never up, and it cannot visit any cell more than once. During his path, the skier performs turns, resulting in oscillating polarity of adjacent cells along the path, alternating between low (1234) and high (6789).

Slalom gates: The slalom gates act as between lines. Cells along a line connecting the poles (circles) of a gate must have values between those in the circles. Each gate is exactly 1 cell wide (the line contains only one cell). Additionally, each gate is numbered along the path of the skier, starting at 1. One of the two circles must contain that respective number. Along the path, the gates alternate between being red and blue.

Fog of War: The grid is partially covered by fog. When a correct digit is placed, the fog will be lifted from the surrounding cells.

Kropki dots: Cells connected by a white dot contain consecutive digits. Digits in cells connected by a black dot are in a 1:2 ratio.

X-clues: Adjacent cells connected with an X must sum to 10.

Solved this back when it was featured on CtC. Then waited half a year and solved it again. It was incredibly fun both times.

Very nice flow and logic - really enjoyed it thank you!

On the CTC youtube solve some people had problems because they thought "lines between gates can bend", luckily I never considered that option :)

Thanks for your comment. Indeed, the rules do not state that the gates must be straight. But: it is also not needed for the solve and I in fact did set the puzzle such that one does not need to make this assumption. Without this assumption, it is of course slightly more complicated :) (I initially put it as 2/5 here)

Absolutely brilliant. Combining such a fun premise with an elegant solution path is incredibly difficult, but you nailed it. Adding this one to my favorites!

That was a lot of fun§ thank you!

I agree with the wording about polarity (the use of the word 'turns' is misleading). Maybe draw a little finishing line at the end :D

Fun puzzle and new concept (to me at least).

The wording in the rules are bit confusing though: "During his path, the skier performs turns, resulting in oscillating polarity of adjacent cells along the path, alternating between low (1234) and high (6789)."

To me I assumed this meant that when the path turns, there is oscillating polarity, but it really means the whole path.
