Pizza Dinner for Four

(Published on 17. November 2023, 05:00 by Will Power)

Normal Sudoku rules apply. DUTCH WHISPERS- Numbers on the red line are at least 4 apart from their neighbors on the line. The solver must make the sum of all numbers on the red line a minimum. Numbers in cages sum to the number in the top left corner of the cage. Numbers in gray squares are EVEN. All possible even numbers ON THE RED LINE are given. Numbers in gray circles (the cups for the family's drinks) are ODD. The yellow line is the pizza crust, and has no effect on the puzzle.

I, for one, love the outside-the-box rule set. Not often do I get a good chuckle out of the rules. Fun puzzle, thank you!

Sorry this really is not my puzzle. Maybe if you were to give the sum of the red lines so it feels less guessy.

While minimizing the numbers on the red lines, and following all other rules, no guessing is required or advised. Thanks for playing. -Will Power

Once I understood the pepperoni rule (still a bit unclear) on minimizing the number the solve is very smooth. Fun puzzle.

I'm struggling to understand the "minimize" rule. Take the line heading up in col 6 from the 9. The even number box tells me r3c6 could be either 2/4/6/8 and then dutch whispers says 2/4 only. Can I independently decide it must be 2 to minimize or should I be looking at all of the red lines to make a determination?

@erik All rules must be satisfied, so do not mentally "put away" any rules temporarily. The sum of all 21 cells on the red line should be considered. Notice that column 6 and row 3 only have 2 even numbers on the red. The highest even number to be avoided is the 8. The 4 would require both an 8 and 9 to be on the red line, so 4 and 8 are your maximum numbers to avoid. Peace to you. -Will Power

If only I would understand this "minimize the number"-rule. I have no idea what it means.

@VeTaurus Try to pick values on the red lines to make the total sum as low as possible, while continuing to follow the normal sudoku rules and Dutch Whisper rule. Thank you for commenting. -Will Power

@Will Power: Thanks for clarifying! With this it was an easy puzzle. But I think that the description of the rule is not accurate. I would have never thought that it means to search for the lowest possible sum of the dutch whisper lines.

"The Pizza Restaurant Chef tries to minimize the number of pepperonis cut." is a RULE, without it there are multiple solutions.

@Melriken Yes, that's right. I am glad you followed your instinct and got the right solution the first time. Thank you for playing and commenting. -Will Power
