Shifter Lines 101: Introduction to Shifter Lines

(Published on 14. November 2023, 11:43 by gUBBLOR)

Here comes a new constraint - Shifter Lines, and with it the start of a new series. For those that have solved some of my Equality Cage puzzles the constraint will probably feel somewhat familiar. The next puzzle in the series:
Shifter Lines 102: Lock the killer in the cage

All my series:
Equality Cages
EquaLite Cages
Shifter Lines
Shifter Dots

Rules:
Normal Sudoku rules apply. Place the digits 1 through 9 in each empty cell. Digits must not repeat within the same row, column, or box.

Shifter lines: Adjacent digits within the same box on a shifter line share both parity (even/odd) AND polarity (low/high). Whenever the line enters a new box either the parity OR the polarity shifts, never both. Shifter lines can never have 5 on it. Digits may repeat on lines.

Kropki dots: A black dot between cells indicates cell values with a 2:1 ratio. A white dot between cells indicates cells with consecutive values. Not all dots are shown.

XV: Adjacent cells connected with an X must sum to 10. Adjacent cells connected with a V must sum to 5. Not all X's or V's are shown.

Here's an example of a valid shifter line:

Incredible! Very powerful rule, and this was my favourite flavor of puzzle: Beginner.

This is a perfect introduction to Shifter Lines. In particular, the 1 with the Kropki dot in box 9 really exemplifies where to start and shows the logic of how to proceed.

Very enjoyable for a beginner (like me) in other Sudoku styles. Thank you for a great puzzle.

9:56! Very fun rule set. The break-in was really easy, but I did make a wrong deduction at some point so I did break it once

This took me emberrassingly long time to do, because it ket breaking. I still have no idea where I went wrong but I finally didi it. So happy.

A perfect introduction to shifter lines

15:18 for me, I started this expecting to not be able to finish it but it proved to be far more of an approachable design/ruleset than I expected, nicely done :)

Haven't solved a puzzle this quickly or smoothly before, really well done setting it! Managed to speedrun it in 8:29.

This was a wonderful puzzle and a great introduction to this fun new constraint. I can't wait to see what people can do with a ruleset like this

Fun constraint; looking forward to seeing more!

really enjoyed this

Found this pretty fun, but also gave up once due to the line behavior in box 3.

I'm curious how the more difficult versions will work as the rule is rather restrictive. If you know one digit, it immediately reveals the second, etc.

Rephrased the shifter line rules for clarification

Really enjoyable puzzle once I figured out how the constraints worked. The shifter lines in box 3 confused me initially, but that was my error. It was great fun.

Very nice constraint, it was funny to solve. Thank you
