Fog Operations

(Published on 8. November 2023, 21:01 by sdholmes)

Please feel free to leave any comments or feedback! I'd love to hear if you liked the ruleset and the puzzle overall! Enjoy :)

RULES:

Normal sudoku rules apply. A white dot separates consecutive digits. Black dots are in a 1:2 ratio. Digits separated by an X or V sum to 10 or 5 respectively. Placing correct digits will clear surrounding fog covering the grid and reveal hidden clues.

***ALL CAGES ARE 5 CELLS LONG. Digits may not repeat in a cage and totals are always in the top, left-most cell. Cages do not branch or include 2x2s and all totals are INTEGERS ONLY (No fractional totals!).

***CAGE ORDER OF OPERATIONS: Starting from the TOP end of a cage, digits are Multiplied, Divided, Added, and then Subtracted to form the cage total. (MDAS)

I.e. A cage with the digits: 2,3,1,4,5 (top to bottom) would have a total of 5.

Wow! Very nice logic!

I was convinced that rows 1 and 2 could only be completed by guessing, but I was able to find a logical way to solve them after some thinking and trial & error in the notes. Such a fun and unique puzzle!

Quite a fun puzzle. I admit I stared at the start for a moment, but this felt really fun. I may have missed something with the final box and took a guess. Thanks for setting and sharing!

Once you understand the ruleset, the puzzle actually becomes pretty straight forward. But very enjoyable and I had a lot of fun solving it!

Loved it! However - and correct me if I'm wrong - isn't the ending only solvable by an assumption that cage totals have to be whole numbers? This isn't specified in the rules, and yet, if the final cage total was allowed to be 4.5 or 0.5, the solver couldn't be certain which is correct. Or did I miss some key element once I got towards the ending?

Yes you are correct. The rules specify that all cage totals are integers (allowing for neg numbers as well but no fractional totals). Perhaps I should have bolded that to make it more clear.

Ooooh, ok. I had to look up what an integer was after this, haha

I didn't understand the instructions, is there an example for the cage order of operations?

Yes at the end of the rules description, there is an example there.

Great fog sudoku, my fav variant.
However, I did find a deadly pattern of sorts at the end of the solve. I couldn't solve lines 1 and 2 without "guessing" a digit and following all the way to see if it was correct or not.

I’m glad you liked it. Yes the ending would in fact be a deadly pattern if it were not for the cage logic. (There is indeed a logical way to finish it off). One if the two scenarios breaks mathematically even without knowing the cage total…Yet ;)

The f-puzzles version comes up with no fog.

Thanks for the heads up.
