String Quartet

(Published on 5. November 2023, 01:26 by IcyFruit)

Normal sudoku rules apply. Divide the grid into 4 orthagonally connected sections such that each section shares an edge with every other section and no 2x2 area is occupied by only one section.

Cells on the same line belong to the same section. Each section has a different constraint which all of its lines must obey. The constraints for each section are:

1. RENBAN: Digits on a line do not repeat and form a consecutive set, in any order.

2. PALINDROME: The digits along a line are the same when read from each end.

3. GERMAN WHISPER: Digits which are adjacent on a line must have a difference of at least 5.

4. REGION SUM: Each segment of a line within a 3x3 box must have the same sum. The sum may be different for different lines.

Very nice and quite challenging. Even after all the difficulty to color, the ensuing sudoku presents a solid challenge in itself.

The rules were somewhat unclear to me. A region sum line in one single box usually makes no sense, which is why I did not even consider such a thing. It was only after giving up initially and reading the comments that I learned that this was allowed. After that, the puzzle was still very hard for me, but also very enjoyable. What a brilliant mind it takes to set something like this up.

Unfortunately it was not clear from the ruleset that a region sum line in a single box is allowed. Maybe it also just because I am bad at English. Apart from that It was a stellar experience. Thank you for the puzzle.

You're an insane person for making a 4 colors yin-yang puzzle, but you're also a real genius for making a 4 colors yin-yang puzzle with a flow this good, from the sections connectivity to the sudoku resolution.
Take a bow please, I'll remember this one for a long while.

Seems to be a typo in the solution code, or its description.

edit - thanks, columns 5 & 8 worked.
