Japanese Products Sudoku

(Published on 6. November 2023, 12:00 by RockyRoer)

The Rules:

  1. Normal sudoku rules apply. Fill every row, column, and 3x3 box with the digits from 1-9 once each.
  2. [Shaded Cells] Shade two cells in every row, column and 3x3 box.
No two shaded cells can touch orthogonally.
  3. [Japanese Products] Shaded cells divide the rows/columns up into 1, 2, or 3 'blocks'. Clues outside the grid represent the product of the sums of the digits in these blocks. Examples:
    • 123X5X789 would have a clue of 720,
      because (1+2+3)x(5)x(7+8+9) = (6)x(5)x(24) = 720.
    • X23456x89 would have a clue of 340
      because (2+3+4+5+6)x(8+9) = (20)(17) = 340.
    • X2345678X would have a clue of 35.
Some clue totals must be deduced:
    • AA is a two-digit number where both digits match.
    • BBB is a three-digit number where all three digits match.
    • 10x is a multiple of 10.
    • Odd clues have an odd product

It’s amazing how the given numbers with constraints make for such a smooth solve. It was very hard for me but once it started unravelling, it was very enjoyable.

Brilliant puzzle. The AA and BBB clues in particular produced some really interesting logic :)

I almost made the mistake of treating the shading like star battle, but that is of course not what the rules say. It is quite surprising how much the products are constrained by the specific numbers. Hard and very nice!

Very clever puzzle! There are some tricky points there but it turns out not quite difficult! Thank you!

Nice!
[I should have read "No two shaded cells can touch orthogonally." earlier ...]
