①③② Counting Loop ③②③

(Published on 25. October 2023, 16:43 by ElChiglia)

---- RULES ----

Normal Sudoku rules apply: Fill the grid with digits 1 to 9 appearing once each in every row, column, and 3x3 box.

Galaxies: Divide the grid into regions of orthogonally connected cells. Each region contains exactly one red circle and is rotationally symmetric around the circle. Every cell must be part of exactly one such region.

Counting Loop: After determining the galaxies, draw a 1-cell-wide loop (orthogonally connected cells) into the grid which fulfills the following requirements:
  • The loop must go through all cells containing red circles. If a red circle is on an edge or corner, the loop must only pass through at least one of the adjacent cells.
  • The loop cannot enter any galaxy more than once.
  • The loop cannot touch itself, not even diagonally.
The found loop will act as a counting line. Each digit on the loop indicates exactly how often this digit appears on the loop. Thus, if, for example, a 5 is on the loop, there must be in total exactly five 5s on the loop.

Killer cages: Digits in a dotted cage must sum to the small number given.

Kropki dots: Cells connected by a white dot contain consecutive digits. Digits in cells connected by a black dot are in a 1:2 ratio.

Quadruple Clues: Digits in larger white circles must appear at least once in the four surrounding cells.

Had to try this one a couple times; I kept missing the same important rule combination that makes it possible to solve. Once I made that connection on the last try, the rest flowed beautifully.

This one took me a very long time, but even when I was struggling it always felt fair, and then making progress felt fantastic.

Truly excellent puzzle. Very well done.

This is the kind of puzzle where in the middle of solving I ask myself - “How was it even possible to create this?”
