Crux

(Published on 22. October 2023, 16:09 by Jay Dyer)

Rules

  • Normal sudoku rules apply.
  • Divide the grid entirely into '15-clumps' - non-overlapping orthogonally connected groups of cells, each of which contains no repeated digits and sums to 15.
  • An arrow in a grid indicates that exactly N 15-clumps can be seen in the direction of the arrow, where N is the digit in the arrow's cell. The arrow's cell is not counted, though that cell's clump may be counted if other cells in it are visible in that direction. Two arrows in the same cell are counted as independent clues.

Solve in Sudokupad or Penpa+.

Solution code: Row 8.

Wow. Incredible puzzle, took me about 2.5 hours to do. I was befuddled at how to handle the crossing in the center; it felt impossible. Wonderful puzzle.

Took me quite some time (4h 40m) but every deduction was worth it!

Neat! I got stuck in the mid-solve for a while but there was another very clever trick allowing to make more progress. The solve stopped being diabolical from there.

Amazing Puzzle! Fantastic break-in, and then keeps going with fresh interesting logic.

Excellent work with the name. I spent about 10 minutes without a digit, but after checking the puzzle name again I immediately looked to the right place.

One of the most outrageous break-ins I've seen in a long time. And not getting easier after that. Jay you have really outdone yourself with this one.

zow, brainmelting puzzle. very cool how the types of logic used shift as the puzzle progresses. A great addition to the n-clump genre

It took me over 3 and a half hours, about 50 minutes of which staring at a mostly emtpy grid trying to find the break-in...
Beautiful puzzle though!

I think this is one of the most intricate and fascinating puzzles I've ever done. The fact that you are able to make progress from so little information, the way it reminds me from logic from other variants and genres that arises naturally from the setup. Another masterpiece :)

Very hard indeed! But very interesting!

Brilliant puzzle: beautiful logic to uncover and a very satisfying puzzle to finish. I had to think very differently from what I expected even to break in.
