Beginner Series, Thermo Sudoku

(Published on 13. October 2023, 03:25 by SimplePurpleFrog)

This puzzle is part of the Beginner Series: Also check the Easy Doubles Series: Rules:

Each row, column and 2x2 box contains the digits 1 to 4 once each.

Digits on a thermo must increase from the bulb end.

Instructions given to ChatGPT 4, below. ChatGPT essentially fails, then after much prompting, finds the solution by chance.

You can play Beginner Series, Thermo Sudoku on f-puzzles or CtC.

Explicit rules for ChatGPT 4:

Instructions for ChatGPT:

Given a 4x4 square, regions are formed by:

r/ each row, numbered 1 to 4 from the top;

c/ each column, numbered 1 to 4 from the left;

b/ each box, with box 1 in r1,2 c1,2, box 2 in r1,2 c3,4, box 3 in r3,4 c1,2 and box 4 in r3,4 c3,4.

We define a thermo as an ordered set of cells, we call the first cell the bulb. Digits along a thermo must increase from the bulb end.

In this puzzle digits 1 to 4 must appear once each in each of the regions. (normal 4x4 sudoku rules).

In addition two thermos are defined as follows:

  • thermo 1 starts with its bulb in r1c2, the next cell is r1c3, the next and last cell is r2c3;
  • thermo 2 starts with its bulb in r3c2, the next and last cell is r2c1.

Please solve this puzzle.

9:59 - All but the last 59 seconds was spent getting the first digit. Once that happened it was a matter of seconds.

I very much enjoyed this puzzle, because it wasn't just coloring in the numbers as many 1 star puzzles are. It involved a very distinct logical step that forced me to slow down and reflect on the relationship between cells. It was a small detail, and I'm a better solver after doing this one. Thank you!

Thanks for your effort with ChatGPT, very interesting.

SPF> You are welcome, it was fun & ChatGPT 4 was tantalisingly close to solving this one. Just missing a few steps.

I totally agree with you, ViKingPrime. Of course, this puzzle is rather easy and kind of a sudoku snack. But why does the rating of easy puzzles almost always has to be downvoted? I quite enjoyed this one. Thank you for setting and sharing this nice little puzzle, SimplePurpleFrog!

SPF> Thank you for your kind comments, much appreciated. I like your expression "sudoku snack" :-)

The ratings are inevitable I suppose, given the size and the ease of the puzzle. It's fascinating though, to go back and see why it works the way it works.

SPF> Thank you for your kind comments, much appreciated. As to the ratings, people see what they want to see, and that's Ok.
