Same Difference

(Published on 9. October 2023, 13:18 by marty_sears)

This is part 1 of my Differences series.

Part 1: Same Difference

Part 2: Different Differences

Part 3: Same Zifference

Part 4: Spot the Difference

Part 5: Diffambiguate

Part 6: Pseudo Differences

Part 7: Ziffer Spots

Part 8: Ziffers of Entropy

Part 9: Difference Diamonds

Part 10: Some Difference

Part 11: ???

Rules:

  • Normal sudoku rules apply.
  • Turquoise lines are 'Same Difference' lines. Each pair of adjacent digits on one of these lines has the same difference. However, this 'difference value' may be different for different lines.
  • A digit in an orange diamond indicates how many lines have a difference value equal to that diamond digit. Eg: a 3 in a diamond indicates that there are 3 lines whose adjacent digits differ by 3.

Great puzzle. I'm excited to start another series by Marty.

That taught me about assumptions I make without realising it.

Nice puzzle, I hit a block and when I had my aha moment I thought "that was hidden in plain sight!"

Very nice flow! Just the pleasant amount of difficulty.

Brilliant puzzle! So clever. I thought I knew what the "aha" moment was early on, then later when nothing seemed to work I found the true "aha".

Thanks for the great puzzle. Usually when I am stuck in a sudoku it is because there seem to be too many options. Here, I was stuck because I convinced myself there weren't any options left at all. Great puzzle experience!

Wow, what a puzzle! There's one really cheeky deduction that took me days to find, but the rest went quite smoothly

It took me a few restarts, for the same reason as the others :). Very smooth solve with that in mind.

Fantastic puzzle. Thanks, @ marty_sears :).

This a really nice puzzle with some fresh logic and not too hard: I have only seen the difference line rule once before and I enjoyed working out the logic with the accompanying counting cells.

Excellent puzzle. Took a couple restarts to get it, but the logic was lovely.

Fascinating rule set, and great execution! I thought I'd broken the puzzle for a while, but then suddenly realized a possibility I hadn't considered, which was a great "Aha!" moment.

Reply - ah that's amazing to hear, thanks! Haha I think I might know which moment you're talking about. I wonder if it was the same missed possibility that caused ThePedallingPianist to get stuck too for a while...

Awesome idea and I love the interaction between the lines and the diamonds! Not easy but very smooth and satisfying! :D
