Grid Your Lions

(Published on 16. September 2023, 23:53 by cristophermoore)

In Shogi, the Lion piece can take two Chess King's steps in a single move. In this puzzle, any two cells exactly two King's moves apart must have different digits: namely, if they are a Knight's move apart or separated by two diagonal steps. For instance, if r3c3 is a 7, then a 7 cannot appear in any of r1c12345, r12345c1, r5c12345, or r12345c5 (see diagram below).

If two cells are just a single King's move apart, their digits may be the same if otherwise allowed.

Standard Sudoku and quad rules apply: the digits in a circle must appear at least once in the 2x2 square around it.

The break in was stunning, as was the similar reasonings in each box, but the way you dance around the grid at the end is so satisfying.

Beautiful puzzle! Had a really fun time solving it, and the symmetry early on that eventually leads to the break-in was superb. Thanks for sharing!

Fun puzzle, and a very innovative rule. Thanks for setting and sharing, @ cristophermoore:). (Am a bit surprised by the 3* rating; I think it is at least a 4*.)

Delicately constructed! (and I wholeheartedly agree with Silverscree, top-notch title).

Very pretty patterns! I quite like puzzles like this that sort of support and reward a form of controlled bifurcation to gradually reduce the solution space symmetrically. That differentiating 57 quad was a particularly clever choice.

Also, this may be my new favourite puzzle title

A nice idea. Tricky to think through the opening but the resulting geometry is fun
