Star Killer Part 9: White Dwarf vs. Red Giant

(Published on 11. January 2024, 20:00 by FischmitFahrrad)

Standard Star Killer Sudoku rules apply (see below).

Additional constraints on placement of stars:
  • Palindrome: The Xth cell from one direction of a black line and the Xth cell from the other direction of that line must both contain a star or both be empty.
  • Each cell that contains a star has to be either '1' or '5'.

Additional constraints on values:
  • Parity Mirror: Cells mirrored by the lines in r5 and c5 must change parity (high/low). E.g. If r1c1 is a low digit (12345) both r1c9 and r9c1 have to be a high digit (56789).
  • (high/low-)Palindrome: The Xth cell from one direction of a red line and the Xth cell from the other direction of that line must either both be low (12345) or both be high (56789).
Each '5' can act as both low or high, even at the same time.
  • Renban: Digits on a purple line form a set of non-repeating consecutive digits in any order.

Star Killer Rules:
Place exactly two stars into each row, column and box. Stars may not share an edge (no diagonal constraint!). The number in the top-left corner of a cage (if given) gives you the number of stars, that are outside of the cage and share an edge with that cage.
Digits in a cage do not repeat and sum to the total X. The number in the top-left corner of a cage must be equal to the digit sum of X.

The only one so far to make me abandon star shading. Which I did as soon as I got all the 1s and 5s placed.

I really liked how the middle row/column was resolved which I would not have spotted as easily if I didn't switch to parity shading instead.
