An Expansion on Colouring

(Published on 12. September 2023, 01:37 by Silverscree)

After receiving some nice feedback on my puzzle from yesterday, and some helpful pointers in how to produce CtC links, I thought I would make a quick companion piece. I think this one is slightly harder than the last one, but still simple enough if you are used to colouring and negative constraints.

Rules:

  • Normal 6×6 sudoku rules apply: Place the numbers 1 to 6 exactly once each in every row, column and 2×3 box.
  • XV: Anywhere in the grid that two adjacent cells sum to 5, a V is placed between them. Similarly, cells that sum to 10 have an X between them. ALL possible Xs and Vs are given.
  • Kropki: The white dot sits between two consecutive digits. NOT all possible dots are given.

Solution code: Row 3. Six digits in total.

The negative constraint was a nice touch.

I got stuck at the end thinking there was no unique solution for this puzzle. When I first read the rules, I questioned why the X rule was mentioned since there were no X's in the grid. Then, I read Ynotuu's comment and understood. Great puzzle, just needed a little outside push!

Really nice and not too difficult! If you think towards the end this does not have a unique solution… look for the one constraint you haven‘t used yet!

Author edit: thank you! I was quite careful to make sure that last deduction was necessary for the solve (the first version used a little killer constraint but it gutted that lovely bit of logic).
