Checkered (Psycho Look-and-Say/German whispers/Renban)

(Published on 29. August 2023, 16:54 by dumediat)

This is a puzzle that I created for Piatato's birthday, and they kindly encouraged me to publish this here to share with all of you! This is the fourth in the series of puzzles using this constraint, if you enjoyed this puzzle or would like a simpler introduction please try the other puzzles on my page with this constraint as well.

Ratings, comments, and feedback are much appreciated! Please feel free to reach out to me on Discord if you have any comments or questions. Please also feel free to try my other puzzles here.

Rules:

  • Normal sudoku rules apply.
  • German whispers: Adjacent digits along green lines must differ by at least 5.
  • Renban: Each purple line contains a set of consecutive, nonrepeating digits in any order.
  • Psycho Look-and-Say: Digits in pink cages point to boxes in the grid and provide a referred cell which is in the same position in both boxes. The number in the top left corner should be read as a look-and-say number, which says the exact number of times a digit appears in the cells referenced by that cage (eg, a '23' clue means there are exactly two 3s in the referenced cells). Digits placed within cages do not count towards the look-and-say total unless they are self-referencing, and digits may not repeat in cages.
  • As a variant rule for this puzzle, if a cage "claims" a cell as part of its look-and-say clue, that cell may not be claimed by any other cages. For example, the two "19" cages in r6c4 and r9c7 cannot both contain a 4 to claim the given 9 in r6c1. This rule does not apply to cells that do not contribute to look-and-say clues. For example, the two "21" cages could contain digits that point to the same cell containing a 5, since that does not contribute to the "21" clue.

To help familiarize yourself with the rules of psycho look-and-say cages, I have included a link to a playable 6x6 example below along with the solved grid (green cells in the solution are ones that are referencing another cell, and gray cells are ones that are not):
