A Flock of Pixels (Colourful Killers)

(Published on 27. August 2023, 15:56 by The Book Wyrm)

This puzzle was created for a challenge on the CtC discord server, where I had a Duel with @MosssLeee to create a puzzle that makes pixels art.
Since making this puzzle, I have made an easier puzzle with the same ruleset, since this one is very tough. If you want to try that one first, it can be found here.
Rules:
  • Normal sudoku rules apply: Place the digits 1-9 once each in every row, column, and region.
  • Digits in a cage do not repeat.
  • Colour each cage according to the last digit of the sum, using the key provided. Note: the colours used are slightly different in the penpa and Sudokupad versions.
  • Numbers in the top left corner of a cage give the sum of orthogonally adjacent cages of a different colour.

It's more arithmetically intensive than I feared, but a lovely construction :)

Pencil-marking was a bit of a challenge, trying to keep track of potential cage sums.

As others have said, got a lot easier after the break-in, and was excellent.

Not as hard as I thought it would be once I found the break-in. So well chosen cages! Really beautiful!

Finally had a big chunk of time tonight, and told myself, alright, this is now or never… and I did it, getting it rated at once, hurray! I just have to echo polar’s comment here. Granted, I did have an immensely hard time just to even start – it felt like trying to catch an oily fish while in free fall, or during a mud fight or what have you, and I after finally managed to get something going, I thought it’d be a similarly intense fight for every inch of grid/cage, but no, not at all, it’s absolutely amazing how things just literally kick into gear, and how big chunks can be uncovered (or colored, rather) at a time “fairly” quickly. Just incredible setting from start to finish, hats off!

Probably the hardest sudoku I've ever completed, very nice to finish though! Was really hard to wrap my head around how to progress, though I got there in the end.

Very nice! And quite tough too. A pretty good picture too, given the constraints!

An awesome twist on killer sudoku! Surprisingly smooth given its complexity and definitely not as arithmetically intensive as I feared at first glance. Thank you :)

I absolutely loved this, both the concept and the implementation, very hard though.
