Counting Fences

(Published on 23. August 2023, 19:50 by LeviD)

Rules:

1. Standard Sudoku rules apply.

2. Each fenced area encloses a unique sum of digits.

3. All orthogonally adjacent digits with a 1:4 ratio are separated by a dark green dot.

It unfortunately won't check the answer but here's an approximation of the puzzle using Sudokulab.

Rule Clarifications:

Rule 2: The sum of every digit enclosed within a fenced area is unique when compared to the sum of every digit enclosed within any other fenced area. For example, if a fenced area included exactly three digits and those digits were 4, 5 and 6, then that fenced area encloses the sum of 4+5+6=15. This would mean no other fenced area on the board encloses digits which also sum in total to 15. The board includes two enclosed areas with exactly one digit, one enclosed area with exactly two digits, and 24 enclosed areas with exactly three digits.

Rule 3: Orthogonally adjacent digits separated by a dark green dot must have a ratio of 1:4. e.g. the digits must be 1 and 4 or 2 and 8. The digits may be placed in either order. There are exactly five such pairs in the puzzle and all five pairs have been marked with a dark green dot. Diagonally adjacent digits are not constrained by this rule.

Notes:

The concept for this puzzle was inspired significantly by the puzzle "Unique Values" which was created by Mesmer and featured on Cracking the Cryptic with the remarkable Simon Anthony here:

This is my first attempt at setting a puzzle so hopefully I've made this post correctly. I do hope someone out there enjoys it. Any feedback is welcome.

Happy Solving!

Solution code: Please enter the 9 digits found in row 5 from left to right with no spaces: e.g. 123456789

Nice puzzle! Some cages are weird in a good way. Not that difficult though

The logical route to solve the puzzle is intuitive, no need for too deep branch assumptions, no monster blocking!

Revision 3. Replaced software link with an updated Sudokulab link which has an appearance closer to the intended puzzle.

Revision 2: Added a link to software for those who'd prefer to work on it that way. The look isn't quite right but it hopefully serves as a suitable approximation.

Revision 1: Added rule clarifications to the German speaking instructions.

While there's no link to the puzzle in any software, I got around that by just using a blank grid and colouring the areas in.

Fun puzzle, interesting idea, and quite approachable.
