Ylang Ylang Yin Yang

(Published on 18. August 2023, 06:17 by Awedish)

Rules:

Normal sudoku rules apply. Shade some cells such that all shaded cells are orthogonally connected and all unshaded cells are orthogonally connected. No 2x2 square may be fully shaded or fully unshaded. Within the unshaded region, orthogonally adjacent digits may not be consecutive. The shaded region must be comprised of non-overlapping 3-length renban lines in an L shape. Renban lines must contain a set of consecutive, non-repeating digits in any order. Additionally, no 2x2 square may contain a set of 4 consecutive digits.

Or if you prefer, on f-puzzles

For clarification, here is an example board with a legal yin yang shading, and the renban elbows that create it.

Solution code: Row 8 from left to right; 9 digits, no spaces.

This might've been my personal record for how often I've broken a puzzle. Beyond making all kinds of mistakes, I was also pretty slow to grasp the central logic of the ruleset. Only highlight was that I found the break-in right away.

Woo-hoo! Made it! 90 minutes. I'm going to give it three stars simply because ... if this amateur can solve it, it must not have been TOO hard, ha ha. But highest score for rating ("very nice") because it was a LOT of fun to push through!
