Toroidal Treasure Map (Pairdoku, Killer, Clone)

(Published on 18. August 2023, 16:48 by heliopolix )

Thanks to riffclown's Pairdoku and bolgat's Labyrinth of the Minotorus for inspiration for this puzzle. Thanks to all my testers for their time and feedback.

The sequel to this puzzle is Toroidal Treasure Map II.

The notorious pirate captain Topologybeard created a pair of incomplete maps to hide his buried treasure. Brave adventurers are needed to help find the long-lost hoard!

These puzzles are intended to be solved by a pair of solvers, with each solver seeing only one of the puzzles. Solvers are encouraged to communicate any and all information verbally, and use of the coloring and line tools is likewise encouraged.

Rules:

Normal Sudoku rules apply.

Cross-Grid Toroidal Borders: Line and cage clues which exit one grid will enter on the opposite side of the *other* grid in the same row or column. For example: a clue which exits one grid at r1c5 (at the top) will enter the other grid at r9c5 (at the bottom).

Normal killer cage rules apply. Digits may not repeat in a cage, and sum to the total (if given). If a cage is present in multiple grids, the total may be given in either grid.

Landmark Clones: A landmark is a group of the same symbols or a line. Each landmark contains the same digits in the same relative positions in both grids. Rotations and reflections are not allowed. Landmarks include Mountains (triangles), Forests (arrows), Caves (diamonds), Lakes (hexagons), and Rivers (lines). Rivers may cross grid borders (other landmarks may not).

Playable Example:
The following images show a completed playable example. Both 6x6 grids are shown at the same time in the example.

Example: Play in SudokuPad

Comments are always welcome. I'd love to hear your thoughts about the puzzle. Have fun!

Streamers have permission to use this puzzle.

Side A: Play in SudokuPad
Side B: Play in SudokuPad

The answer check only checks digits inside the 9x9 grid. Digits outside the grid are ignored.

Solution code: Row 5 from Side A, followed by Row 8 from Side B (18 digits, no spaces)

Amazing puzzle idea! It took us a bit to optimize our communication. Once we figured it out, the puzzle flowed quite nicely.

This was so much fun to solve. The difficulty really depends on how well you can communicate with your partner.

Added images for Side A and and Side B (blurred to keep each side hidden for each solver). Grey boundaries represent off-grid information known to both solvers.
