Hot Shots (DIY thermometers)

(Published on 21. August 2023, 11:15 by apiyo)

------

I was really pleased to find I could build such a symmetrical puzzle on this theme. I hope the long ruleset isn't too offputtting. Enjoy!

------

Normal Sudoku rules apply.

Standard rules

Blue squares must contain even digits. Digits on thermometers (to be located) increase from the bulb end.

DIY thermometers

Draw nine thermometers in the grid which travel orthogonally and do not share cells with each other. Up to two thermometers may branch. The nine bulbs are located on the six large coloured snooker balls and the three large white cue balls. Every thermometer visits at least one small red ball and every red ball is visited by a thermometer.

Coloured ball thermometers are of length N and must contain the digit N, where N is the ball's points value in snooker. Yellow=2, Green=3, Brown=4, Blue=5, Pink=6, Black=7.

Cue ball thermometers are 4 cells long. They visit exactly one red ball each.

(A branching thermometer's length is the total number of cells visited on all its branches combined.)

Maximum placement

The number 147 appears in a horizontal trionimo contained wholly within one box in the puzzle.
