Galactic Aquariums (Spiral Galaxy Aquarium hybrid)
(Published on 17. August 2023, 01:04 by AnalyticalNinja )
Well I've got an interesting one today.
Mathpesto and I placed 19 different pencil puzzle genres on a
spinner, spun it twice, and set puzzles combining the results. The spinner gave us Spiral Galaxy + Aquarium and I just couldn't be happier with how my resulting puzzle turned out! Also, I'd absolutely encourage you to try Mathpesto's puzzle as well, and it can be attempted
here.
Rules:
Spiral galaxy: Divide the grid into rotationally symmetrical regions, no centers of rotation are given.
Aquariums: The regions form aquariums, which contain rows of air, water, or both. Water fills aquariums from the bottom up.
Outside clues: Clues outside the grid equal the length of the first string of water cells within a region from that direction.
Additionally: No regions of the same size contain the same number of water cells.
Here is a 4x4 example puzzle to showcase the logic. This first image shows an empty and solved version of it, and if you'd like to attempt the example first, you can do so with
here.
This second image shows the starting grid for Galactic Aquariums and it can be played with
penpa+(answer check on edges and shading using grey for water) or
SudokuPad (no answer check).
Solution code: The region sizes for each of the ten cells in row 8. (Example: row 3 of the example puzzle would read 8844)

Wow, what a puzzle! It really took me some time to figure out how to think about the spiral galaxy logic, but when I figured that out, the puzzle flowed really nicely. Super cool region building!

What a puzzle! -- As you well know, I've long been a fan of your snackdokus, but I had yet to try one of your more beastly puzzles, and wow, this did not disappoint!
And I'm surprised to see the rating (though glad I triggered it!), as this was super hard for me -- though as so often happens when I get really stuck is, it's mostly due to my trying to play by different rules, or just misunderstanding it, but anyhow, yeah, that was amazing, and I'm both proud and happy to have solved it! :D

Yep, can't do it. Have to get back to this some other time. Very cool concept though!

I loved this, especially the ending! This variation on aquarium outside clues is really synergetic for variants, I'd love to see more like it.
