Impossible?

(Published on 16. August 2023, 18:12 by damasosos92)

After helping Raumplaner and others finding a name for this new awesome grid configuration I wanted to create one myself.

I had this idea in mind for a while and it's somewhat a miracle that it works so well in a Quattroquadri grid.

Rules:

Quattroquadri: Place the digits 0 to 8 once each into the 3x3 boxes. Digits may not repeat in the same row, column, or box of the grid.

Impossible?: All the question marks are different digits from 1 to 6 and act as a full rank clue and a x-sums clue at the same time:
  • Full rank: Considering all rows and columns as 6-digit numbers read from all directions and ranked from lowest (1) to highest (24), the question mark represents where in the ranking that row/column lies.
  • X-Sums: The question marks give the sum of the first X digits in their respective row or column, where X is the digit nearest the clue.
Killer cages: Digits in cages do not repeat and sum to the same total.

You can play Impossible? online on CTC-App. Have fun solving and please leave a comment after your solve!

Solution code: Row 2, followed by row 5, both left to right (12 digits, without spaces)

Loved it! I love the way the break-in seems completely impossible (hmm...) but eventually resolves the more you think about it.

This puzzle is incredible! The interaction between X-sum and full rank is excellent!

Took a couple of tries but I finally managed. That was very cool. My only comment is I thought the full rank explanation was very confusing:

"all rows and columns as 6-digit numbers read from the direction of the clue"

Since there are only 6 clues I didn't get how you got to 24 ranks. Maybe emphasize that you mean all rows/columns in both directions, read from the puzzle edge or something.

- thank you for your suggestion. I improved the rules here to better clarify the full rank property.

I'm going to have to wait until Simon or someone solves it on video, lol. Gave it an hour's go and didn't even have a pencil mark.
