Fillomino Skyscraper Ring

(Published on 15. August 2023, 09:00 by Agent)

I wanted to explore the idea of having the outside clues of a puzzle defined by a Fillomino grid surrounding the puzzle. Originally the intent of this "6x6" puzzle was to get familiarized with the rules, but I think the logic was interesting enough to share on its own. I hope you enjoy, it should be approachable.

Rules

  • The grid contains a standard 6x6 Skyscrapers area which must be located by the solver. The rest of the grid is a standard Fillomino. Numbers adjacent to the 6x6 Skyscrapers area are standard Skyscrapers clues.

  • Fillomino: Divide the grid into orthogonally connected regions such that no two regions of the same size share an edge, and enter a number into each cell equal to the size of its region.

  • Skyscrapers: Place the digits 1 to 6 once each in each row and each column. Each digit represents the height of a building. Clues outside the grid indicate the number of buildings seen from that direction. Taller buildings block the view of smaller buildings.

This was a serious puzzle for something originally intended as an example! I was surprised at how many times I got tripped up or had to look for something subtle. Or maybe I'm just not that great at this format. =) But I loved it either way!

Very intersting approach. After the first deductions more and more fun. Still very hard for me but all in all logical ;-)

@Dandelo: I've renamed it to "Fillomino Skyscraper Ring". This is consistent with the naming of this puzzle, which I believe was inspired by the ones you linked:

Very nice. The idea and the puzzle.

Of course the author can choose the name of the puzzle as he wants.
But there are a few similar puzzles in the Rätselportal, where the name "Hochhauskern" was established. In English maybe "skyscraper core" (native speakers could have a better translation). I suggest to use unified names. And this could be the name of a new label.

Here they are:
