Counting only even ... or even only odd?

(Published on 3. August 2023, 11:04 by sujoyku)

Although this is probably clear instantly: This is not a usual killer/little killer sudoku. The little killer/killer clues are modified in such a way that they only indicate the sum of all even or all odd digits. To which group a given clue refers has to be determined during the solve. Below, the rules are explained in more detail and underlined with a few examples. If there remain some points which need clarification please leave a question in the comments. I hope that, despite its slightly unusual rule set, the puzzle is approachable and allows for a joyful solve. Feel free to tell me what you think about it. I wish you happy solving!

- Normal sudoku rules apply.

- Parity little killer: On a marked diagonal, the little killer clue indicates the value of the sum of all even or all odd digits on that diagonal. A little killer clue without given number has the value 0. If the even digits are counted, no odd digit contributes to the sum and vice versa. Whether the even or the odd digits sum up to the indicated value has to be determined by the solver. (If there is no conflict with other rules, digits may repeat on a diagonal.)

Example: A diagonal with the digits 1, 2, 3, and 4 can either have a parity little killer clue of 4 (counting odd) or 6 (counting even).

- Parity killer cages: Digits in a cage do not repeat. The killer clue indicates the sum of all even digits or of all odd digits which are contained in that cage. If the even digits are counted, no odd digit contributes to the sum and vice versa. Whether the even or the odd digits sum up to the indicated value has to be determined by the solver.

Example: A parity killer cage that contains the digits 6, 7, 8 and 9 either has the parity killer clue 14 (counting even) or 16 (counting odd).

Great puzzle! I played the next one in the series first and I liked that very much, so I had to give this one a go as well! Thank you

Thank you for your comment, Snookerfan! Then you did the harder one before the easier I guess. I have already set one further puzzle with this rule set which I might upload later this week.
Kind regards, sujoyku

I didn't really expect an answer to my question "How do you come up with that?". Thank you very much for the explanations! I'm just in awe. (Like my students sometimes say: "I would never come up with that myself!")

btw: Your alias reflects what your puzzles are. A pure joy.

That is very kind of you, nunc. I love solving sudokus myself, so it is nice to hear that my puzzles give joy to other solvers.

My brother (who is brand new to sudoku, this was his first full puzzle) and I solved this one together, and we had a blast doing it! Really lovely logic all around

Thank you for your kind words, AdarshN! I am glad that you and your brother had fun with the puzzle.

Very nice puzzle! I found the rules easily understandable, but find it great that you took the time to write up some examples for newer solvers. It was surprising to realize how strong some of the clues are. And those "impossible" totals create a nice atmosphere.

**
Thank you for your comment, gdc! I am glad that you liked the puzzle. Concerning the rules, I tried to be extra-clear and I am glad that you found them comprehensible.
And you are absolutely right with your observation: Although, in general, the clues give you less or ambiguous information, some of them are more restricted than they were in the usual setting.
Kind regards, sujoyku

Wow. I'm quite exhausted now. But it was a beautiful solve. How do you come up with that?

**
Thank you for your comment, nunc! Maybe the idea came from the wish to build a killer sudoku with "nonsense" clues like a three-cell cage with total 1 or a diagonal with sum value 0. My starting point for the construction were the long diagonals. Then I set a clustered grid (with respect to odd and even) and tinkered about to construct a solution meeting the constraints. Figuring out which diagonals/cages could be useful clues took some more time. Today I noticed that I had put in some superfluous clues and deleted those before uploading. I do not know if your question was meant rhetoric but I hope this is kind of an answer. :)
Kind regards, sujoyku

This is a fun puzzle! Very interesting rule set, but there's a logical path throughout, and it's very satisfying to unravel. Thanks for setting and sharing!

**
Thank you for your kind words, sacklunch! I am glad that you enjoyed the puzzle. I just came up with the idea for this rule set some days ago (I do not claim to have invented it, considering parity in the context of killer sums seems like a natural idea). I thought it might be promising and managed to create this puzzle. Probably there is more potential in this framework than I have yet understood.
Kind regards, sujoyku

It felt like getting 2 puzzles in 1, one odd and one even :)

Very nice puzzle!

**
Thank you for your comment, Gab! I am glad that you liked the puzzle. You are right about the "two puzzles in one". As is sometimes with entropy or German whisper constraints, this puzzle splits a little into two puzzles with the separate groups. This is the first puzzle that I have set with the given rule set. Maybe I will achieve a puzzle with a little more interaction in the future. :)
Kind regards, sujoyku
