Banned cages (Renban killer sudoku)

(Published on 25. July 2023, 15:57 by sujoyku)

I am not so experienced yet with setting renban sudokus but I think that (especially in combination with other puzzle elements) renban lines allow for some interesting deductions. In this puzzle I have integrated them into a killer sudoku. Feel free to tell me in the comments what you think about it. I wish you happy solving!

- Normal sudoku rules apply.

- Killer cages: Digits in a cage do not repeat and sum to the clue in the top left.

- Renban lines: Each purple line contains a set of consecutive non-repeating digits in any order.

I am flabbergasted to see the rating of this puzzle below 90%. I can only assume that some solvers missed your beautiful logic. This was stunning - that gorgeous two-stage break-in, the ‘opposite’ tricks in boxes 4 & 6, and how parts of the puzzle that were previously disconnected in the early solve then became relevant to one another. It felt like puzzle pieces slotting into place perfectly. Oh, and my last digit was r5c5 which I found deeply satisfying given the symmetry of the construction. All in all, this was brilliant. I loved every second of it!

Thank you very much for your appreciating comment, HumanBirdsong! I am glad how you enjoyed the solve. The description of your solve path sounds very accurate to me: Although you get a fair amount of information early on, the solve still requires various deductions to really fill in the grid.

Yes, that’s a good description. It seems at first as if the break-in is obvious, but then the puzzle challenges you to have a deeper insight about the constraints. Very impressive setting. HB.
