Crusties ("Indexed Fives")

(Published on 21. July 2023, 20:01 by RockyRoer)

Here'a a challenging sandwich variant that I was pleased to get down to six symmetrically given clues, all of which are multiples of 5...

The Rules:

  1. Normal sudoku rules apply.
  2. [Crusties - Sandwich Variant] There are two "crusts" in every row, column and 3x3 box that must be found. Numbers outside the grid, when given, indicate the sum of the cells between those crusties in their respective row or column (not counting the crusts). So if R1C5 and R6C5 is a crust, then R2345C5 adds to 25.
  3. [Indexed Fives] Each crust also indicates the location of the five in either its row or column. So if R1C1 is a crust and a 4, then there's either a five in R4C1 or R1C4.

Pulsating interactions! Not being used to solve indexing puzzles, it took me a while to find the clue for the crusties ... . After this it I really appreciated the pure logic.

Love this one. Took me hours but I feel like I appreciated a lot of its subtleties by the end. Kudos for the elegant configuration, too!

Stretching the mind to find all relevant interactions. minimalistic -> very hard but nice. thanks.

Even though I understand the meaning, I still accidentally mix them up during the process. It's a good puzzle.

This puzzle was a great challenge for me. I love indexing puzzles, but I have very little experience with any kind of sandwich sudoku. Love the extra effort to make the clues so “symmetric”. Thanks!
